Wide bowl & aluminum disc engraved with “Giese Cup”

History

The Giese Bowl came into existence during the Smedley administration. Bill Giese had just won the Stephenson Cup at Merion which is a better ball of partners tournament and commented to Walter that it had been a great deal of fun. It is a fairly difficult tournament to win, so flush with victory, Bill proposed to Walter that Ozone have a similar tournament. He said that he would consider it if I could provide a trophy, so Bill hunted around and found an old tennis trophy of his from high school days at the Wellesley Country Club. He then had a disc made and mounted it in the middle. And, just like that, the Giese Bowl was formed at about the same time as the Biddle and Stephenson tournaments.
